Translation:
My Companion...My Shelter...

O my mango tree
my friend
you, though, were not mine
but were, howsoever, very much mine!

Yes, you grew
in someone else's boundary
But always appeared
close to me
from my balcony.

I had no right I admit
on your roots and trunk
but your branches
and foliage were so very mine!

I wait for April
through all year long
when you'll flower
and scatter your scent...

When you will
drive me and the koel crazy
with the intoxication of
your aroma and cool shade.

Those heartless, callous people
fell you
who merely owned the land
on which you were adherent.

I was shocked to death
looking at the road
of whose noise and dust
you always shielded me.

I feel so vulnerable
in your absence
as if
I'm naked in public.

My pal, my buddy, my protector
has gone forever
leaving behind
me and the koel
who will miss you too a lot.

This year
the koel will not sing
it will cry
with me!!

    1. Thank you Indu, but it's not mere imagination. I did have that tree there a couple of weeks back, where a multiplex is coming up...thanks again!

  7. Painful, yet beautiful. I was not very familiar with a few words in the Hindi version. Wasn't I delighted to the meanings in the English one! ;)

  10. when i was a child, we had a big house where there were loads of trees along with a Mango one and a few bel (wood-apple tree and few more. We had a playful time there. While leaving that house, the new owners cut those trees. And it left me feeling bad.
    Very well expressed. :)
